CLARITY HAYNES

Clairty Hanyes is a queer feminist American artist and writer whose painted portraits of queer, trans, cis female and nonbinary bodies fixate on themes of survival, self-definition, and self-determination. Haynes considers the surface of the body akin to a landscape or map, privileging so-called imperfections such as moles, veins, scars, and wrinkles as the most exciting landmarks that guide the process of portraiture.

ABOUT THE WORK:

Genesis is part of an ongoing series of portraits of torsos that began with the artist’s painting of her own torso as a confrontation with past trauma. Finding the process to be healing, she began making torso portraits of her friends, and later of strangers at women’s and queer festivals and retreats. To date, more than 500 people have posed for the project.
